Former Sri Lanka U-19 captain Niroshana shot dead outside his home

Niroshana remained part of the Sri Lanka age-group cricket, representing the U19 side and also captaining it briefly in 2002

On July 17 (Wednesday), in a gruesome murder outside his home in Ambalangoda, former Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Dhammika Niroshana was shot dead in broad daylight in Galle.

Niroshana, who played 12 First Class and five List-A games representing Chilaw Marians, Galle Cricket Club, and Singha Sports Club in his three-year domestic career between 2001 and 2004, is survived by a wife and two children. The Sri Lankan Police said that they are investigating the crime and doing their best to nab the shooter.

The 41-year-old remained part of the Sri Lanka age-group cricket, representing the U19 side and also captaining it briefly in 2002. However, he could not graduate to senior cricket well, scoring only 269 runs and taking just 19 wickets in his 12 First Class appearances.

Niroshana was primarily a fast bowler who could hold the bat when needed down the order. The right-arm pacer shared dressing rooms with Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof, who went on to become stars for the national senior team.
