It was not an ideal start for Tim Robinson in international cricket after he was removed for a duck on his New Zealand debut in April 2024 in a T20I against Sri Lanka. However, nearly one year and six months later, he did something unbelievable, hitting a T20I century in his maiden outing against Australia.
Playing in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, Robinson smashed 66-ball 106 to take his team to a competitive total of 181/6. His knock was filled with six exquisite fours and five brilliant sixes.
With this ton, he became only the third Kiwi batter to score a T20I century against Australia and the sixth ever to register a century in the format. Before Robinson, Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill had scored centuries against Australia in the shortest format in 2010 and 2018 respectively.
Robinson, ever since making his international debut, has been a big plus for the Kiwis as, in only his 13th innings, he now has a century and two fifties to his name, averaging 38 and striking at 137.
In terms of hitting a century in a maiden outing against a full-member side in T20Is is concerned, Robinson joined Chris Gayle and India’s Sanju Samson in an elite list of players who have scored a century against a full-member side in their very first match against that team.
However, his century was not enough as Australia were able to chase down 182 with ease.
