Is Rishabh Pant India’s best wicketkeeper batter?
Well, by the end of the five-match Test series against England, the 27-year-old might well become the greatest wicketkeeper-batter in the subcontinent. He’s already amassed seven tons and missed another seven of them thanks to being dismissed in the 90s.
And so he's already up there as one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batters in the subcontinent, with his numbers on par with Kumar Sangakkara and above his Indian compatriot MS Dhoni, who had six tons. But what are the other records that the 27-year-old has smashed?
With 1815 runs, Pant is already Asia’s best wicketkeeper in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) conditions. The left-hander, during his stellar century, surpassed Dhoni, who had 1731 runs.
Yet another record that Pant blew away, as his seven centuries have helped him go past Dhoni’s six, making him India’s most successful wicketkeeper. It is only a matter of time before he goes past Dhoni’s tally of runs in red-ball format.
79 sixes in 44 Tests, let that sink in. Pant now has scored the most sixes for an Indian wicketkeeper, smashing Dhoni’s record of 78 sixes, which he got in 90 Tests. Pant is just 22 away from topping that all-time list.
Three centuries in England; Pant is a monster. The most any other away wicketkeeper batter has gotten in England is ONE.
Pant has equalled Andy Flower (Zimbabwe) and Les Ames (England) for the record of most centuries (3) for a wicketkeeper in an overseas country. The scary part? He still has four Tests and an innings more to go past that record, and set his own.
Rishabh Pant - 3 in England & 1 in Australia
Jeff Dujon - 1 in England & 1 in Australia
Only two wicketkeepers in Test cricket history have centuries in both England and Australia - Pant and Jeff Dujon (West Indies). When you realise that Pant doesn’t just have one but multiple centuries in England, it is just too scary.
