After the loss against Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals’ hopes for the 2023 season came crashing down, and their only goal now would be to avoid a last-place finish. Delhi’s skipper David Warner too hinted in the post-match presentation against Punjab that the team is started preparing for the next season, conceding defeat this year.
But what remains to be seen is the aftermath of Delhi’s terrible finish. There are high chances that Ricky Ponting, who has been the head coach of the franchise for three years now, could get an axe. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan also made a bold claim that giving the leadership role to Sourav Ganguly, as the head coach would help the franchise.
"Sourav Ganguly's presence in the Delhi dugout is a big deal. I think if Dada is given the responsibility of coach as well, he can make a big difference in this team,” Irfan Pathan told Star Sports.
Currently, Ganguly’s role in the dressing room is that of Director of Cricket, a role that requires him to oversee the Capitals and all the other franchises that are associated with the Delhi Capitals Group. Pathan also insisted that the former Indian captain’s knowledge of the psychology of Indian players could be vital.
“Dada has knowledge of the psychology of Indian players. He knows how to run the dressing room and Delhi should definitely take advantage of that. At the time of the toss, Warner has said that his team has now started preparing for the next season and in this context, it would not be wrong to see Ganguly in a changed role," said Pathan.
Delhi's next two games - against Punjab and Chennai - could very well decide if they finish at the bottom of the table, and could also be vital for the under-performing players to put their hand up.
