Gautam Gambhir shortlisted by BCCI for India head coach role: Reports
Dravid has reportedly communicated to the board that he is unlikely to re-apply and extend his term
In a major development, the BCCI have reportedly approached former India batter Gautam Gambhir for the role of head coach of the Men’s national side, currently held by Rahul Dravid. Dravid's tenure will end after the T20 World Cup in June.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI have shortlisted Gambhir as a potential candidate since Dravid has already communicated to the board that he is unlikely to re-apply or seek another tenure.
Gambhir doesn't have any prior experience coaching at the international level, but he’s mentored Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his mentorship, LSG reached the playoffs in both 2022 & 2023. KKR, meanwhile, are top of the IPL 2024 table and have already sealed their spot in the top two.
Gambhir has long been regarded a ‘serial winner’ for his accomplishments as a player. He was part of the World Cup-winning Indian side in both 2007 and 2011, and top-scored in the finals of the respective competitions. Then, in the IPL, he led a reeling KKR to two titles in the space of three years.
Team India reached the 50-over World Cup final in November but are in the midst of a long trophy drought, having last won an ICC title back in 2013.
Should BCCI’s interest be solid, Gambhir will have 10 days to respond. Last week, the BCCI invited applications for the position of head coach of the India men's senior national team. The board said in a release that the deadline for application submission was 6 PM IST, May 27, 2024.
