Gautam Gambhir is certainly walking on thin ice as far as his role as India's head coach is concerned after the team suffered a gigantic 408-run loss in the second Test against South Africa on November 26 (Wednesday).
Under Gambhir, India have now lost five Tests at home, which include two whitewashes - at the hands of New Zealand and now against South Africa. While it could be a cause for concern for other boards, the BCCI have thrown their weight behind Gambhir as they want to avoid a knee-jerk reaction.
“The BCCI will not rush in taking any decision. The team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will speak to selectors and team management going ahead but there won’t be any knee-jerk action,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Gambhir, who took charge of the Indian side after the T20 World Cup last year, has left his fate in the hands of the BCCI but sent out a stern reminder that it was under him that a young Indian side got the results in England.
“It is for the BCCI to decide. This is something that I said in my first-ever press conference when I became the head coach as well. Indian cricket is important; I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England and won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning,” the head coach said at the post-match press conference.
India will not play a Test at home for another year. Their next international assignment is a white-ball series against South Africa, starting with the One-Day Internationals (ODI) from November 30 (Sunday).
