Former India cricketer and one of the two players after whom the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) is named, Sunil Gavaskar slammed organisers for ignoring him during the presentation ceremony of the BGT 2024-25.
At the presentation ceremony, only Allan Border was there to hand over the winners’ trophy to Pat Cummins after Australia won the Sydney Test by 6 wickets and the series 3-1.
“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar told News Corp.
“I mean, I am here on the ground. To me, it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine.
I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border,” added the Indian legend, who was part of the commentary panel for both the Australian and India broadcast rights holders of the tournament.
Cricket Australia, organiser of the five-Test series, later clarified that Gavaskar had already been made aware that if India retained the BGT, only then would he have been invited to hand over the trophy to Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian captain.
"We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage,” a CA spokesperson statement was published by FOX Cricket.
