Jamie Smith, a generational talent, set all Test cricketing records ablaze with a stroke-filled 184 against India in the second Test at Edgbaston on July 4 (Friday). The 24-year-old has been severely underrated in Test cricket, with 725 runs before the second Test, averaging a staggering 45.31.
But he walked in with England under the utmost pressure, at 84/5, as the hosts were in all kinds of danger. Minutes later, however, Smith put the pressure back on the visitors, counter-attacking from ball one, with a four down the ground.
Smith then attacked Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, taking 22 runs in the latter’s over, racing to 49 off 38 balls. The right-hander brought up his half-century off his 44th ball, with a six against Prasidh, over the fine leg region.
The 24-year-old brought up his century, the third-quickest effort, off just 80 balls, equalling Harry Brook’s tally. Despite Brook falling for 158, the right-handed Smith continued to attack from the other end, smashing a six and a four, taking his score to 184, the highest-ever score for an English wicketkeeper batter.
