After Temba Bavuma was ruled out of the second Test against India in Cape Town with a hamstring strain, South Africa have suffered another setback in the form of Gerald Coetzee, who has now been ruled out of the New Year’s Test after developing pelvic inflammation during the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
The 23-year-old experienced discomfort in his pelvis, which got progressively worse while bowling on day three of the match. He underwent scans on Friday, which revealed the extent of the injury. Hence, Head Coach Shukri Conrad has opted to release Coetzee from the squad as a precautionary measure.
No replacement has been named for Coetzee, but Lungi Ngidi seems the likely candidate to replace him for the match. Coetzee’s bowling was very average in the first Test as he could manage just a single wicket from the Test, but he was in great form leading up to the series.
Dean Elgar will lead the side in Cape Town in what is going to be the farewell Test of his career. The Test will be played at the Newlands in South Africa from January 3, 2024.
