Shreyas Iyer endured one of the nastiest injuries in India’s nine-wicket win over Australia in Sydney. The Indian vice-captain, who was fielding at the backward point region, ran all the way across till the third man region before pulling off a spectacular catch.
However, in the process, he hurt himself heavily as the 30-year-old was seen holding his rib section as the physio helped him off the pitch. While India didn’t need his services with the bat, the Punjab Kings captain was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It was later confirmed that Iyer was admitted because of a laceration of the spleen with internal bleeding.
Days later, Iyer has now responded with his first words after the injury, stating that he’s ‘getting better every passing day’.
“I’m currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received- it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer posted on his social media handles on Thursday, reported the Indian Express.
There’s no timeline for Iyer’s return to professional cricket, although reports suggested that the Indian vice-captain will be away from the game for at least two months. It comes as a big blow to Iyer’s T20I aspirations, as the T20 World Cup is just a few months away, with Iyer away from the setup.
