After being asked to bat first, Maxwell opened the batting with wicket-keeper Joe Clarke. The duo started the innings in a commanding fashion and stitched a vital partnership of 97 runs in the first seven overs.
Despite the loss of two quick wickets, Maxwell continued to take the attack to the opposition and displayed an array of strokes all around the ground. The 33-year old was supported by Stonis, who scored a quickfire 75* off 31 deliveries with four boundaries and six hits over the fence.
The duo forged an unbeaten 132-run partnership for the third wicket in 54 deliveries to help the Stars carve their name in history. En route to this record-breaking stand, Maxwell became the first player to score 150 in a BBL game, surpassing the previous best of 147* by Stonis against the Sydney Sixers in 2020. The knock was studded with 22 fours and four maximums, the highest number of boundaries scored in T20 innings.
In reply, the Hurricanes struggled to get going and managed to score 167/6 in their quota of 20 overs, with Ben McDermott top-scoring with 55 off 33 deliveries.
Despite a crushing defeat, the Hurricanes will face the Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator on Friday, 21st January, at the same venue.
