For over a decade, Mitchell Marsh was one of the most underperforming overseas players in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Marsh debuted all the way back in 2010 in the IPL, but he averaged a mere 19.56 before IPL 2025. His poor track record, combined with his horrific injury record, was one of the reasons Marsh went for just INR 3.40 crore despite being the T20I captain of Australia.
But come IPL 2025, Marsh has put all his woes in the IPL behind him, producing an all-time-great campaign for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batting at the top of the order.
Even before the clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) today, Marsh had set a personal best record of most runs and most 50+ scores in a season. On the night, the Aussie T20I skipper continued to break new ground as he smashed his maiden century in the IPL.
Marsh’s century came off 56 balls, and it was just his second T20 century, with the only other ton coming for Perth Scorchers against Hobart Hurricanes in 2021 in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Against GT, Marsh crossed 50 for the sixth time in the season, becoming the fifth Australian to notch up six or more fifties in an IPL season.
Australians to score 6+ fifties in an IPL season
Shaun Marsh (2008)
Michael Hussey (2013)
David Warner (2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2023)
Glenn Maxwell (2021)
Mitchell Marsh (2025)
Marsh also breached the 500-run barrier for the first time in his IPL career. He became the sixth Australian after Shaun Marsh, Michael Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Shane Watson and David Warner to notch up 500+ runs in an IPL season.
The Aussie T20I skipper, on the night, also became the first overseas batter to score a ton in IPL 2025.
Not just that, Marsh’s ton meant that he and Shaun Marsh became the first pair of brothers to notch up tons in the IPL. Shaun Marsh scored a ton back in 2008, against Rajasthan Royals.
Marsh finished the game with 117 off 64 balls, walking away from Ahmedabad with his highest ever score in T20 cricket.
