Matthew Wade might have retired from international cricket and even put half a foot in the coaching pool, but the 37-year-old, today in Brisbane, showed that he’s still got it as the left-hander smashed 105 off just 68 balls for Tasmania in a domestic 50-over clash against Victoria.
Batting at No.6, Wade, walking in at 135/4, launched an assault for the ages as he hit 8 fours and 6 sixes to help Tasmania get to 381.
Wade, 37, retired from international cricket in October last year, but he played in the 2024/25 Big Bash League and also the 2025 ILT20 in UAE. Today’s clash against Victoria was his second 50-over game of the season, as three days back, he played against New South Wales and hit 40. Wade has been donning the gloves as well.
The wicketkeeper-batter is in the middle of a player-to-coach transition, and a few months ago in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), he served as an assistant coach for Gujarat Titans (GT). It was a relatively successful coaching stint too, as GT finished third with 18 points and made it to the playoffs, before losing to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator.
Coming back to the Tasmania vs Victoria clash, Punjab Kings’ Mitchell Owen smashed 53 off 21 balls opening the batting. Victoria fast bowler Mitch Perry had a day to forget as he leaked 101 runs in the 9.3 overs he bowled.
