Harry Brook’s astonishing Test career continues to scale new heights as on day four of The Oval Test, the Englishman became the fastest man this century to 10 Test tons. Brook, today, brought up his 10th Test century in just his 50th Test innings to script his name in the history books.
Seven other men in Test history have brought up 10 Test tons quicker than Brook, but none have played Test cricket in the last 60 years. Brook edged Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne (51 innings) to become the quickest to 10 Test tons this century.
Fastest to 10 Test centuries (players who debuted post 2000)
Harry Brook - 50 innings*
Marnus Labuschagne - 51 innings
Kevin Pietersen - 56 innings
Andrew Strauss - 56 innings
Virender Sehwag - 56 innings
On the day, Brook played an astonishing knock, one of his finest in Tests. He walked in under serious pressure, with England reeling at 106/3 chasing 374. But the 26-year-old played one of the finest counter-attacking knocks seen in the fourth innings as he hammered 111 off just 98 balls, pumelling India to submission.
The right-hander was on 19 when he got a reprieve — in the form of Siraj stepping on the boundary cushions — but he made sure to make India pay, not putting a foot wrong after that.
Eventually, Brook departed trying to up the ante, but the damage was done by then; he had well and truly put England in the driver’s seat, with the hosts' score reading 301/4 at the time of his departure.
