Harry Brook Named England ODI And T20I Captain
The Yorkshire man had previously led the senior men’s team in an ODI series against Australia
On expected lines, Harry Brook was named the captain of the England ODI and T20I teams on April 7 (Monday). He was the front-runner in the race to replace Jos Buttler, who had resigned from his white-ball captaincy following England’s dismal run in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)’s Rob Key, who is managing director of England’s men’s cricket, while making the announcement, said, “I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats.”
“He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected.”
The 26-year-old, who was part of England's T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2022, has played 44 T20Is and 26 ODIs, although his best outing has been in the longest format, where he is ranked number two amongst batters in the world.
Brook had been Buttler’s deputy for a while and even led the Three Lions in an ODI series against Australia in September 2024.
The Yorkshire batter has been brought up the ranks with useful leadership experience at the youth and Under-19 levels. He led them to the 2018 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand and has also led the England Lions team.
Speaking on his appointment, Brook said, "It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”
"I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them,” he added further.
Brook had earlier opted out of IPL 2025 after being picked by the Delhi Capitals (DC) after being picked up in the auction and was therefore banned for two years from the league.
