The last and final One-Day International against Australia on August 24 (Sunday), although an inconsequential game, might have been nightmarish for South Africa as they suffered their biggest ever defeat in the format.
However, there was one moment in the game, that too during the dismal South African innings, that made all the people present at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, including the TV commentators, laugh their heart out.
After Baby AB and Chennai Super Kings sensation Dewald Brevis smashed Xavier Bartlett for a huge six over deep backward square leg, the ball went past the sitting enclosures and towards the parking area.
A young boy, most probably an Australian fan by the looks of his shirt, chased the ball. He got it and then tried to run away with it. Realising that there are cameras, he tried to hide it under his shirt and then fake threw it towards the playing area with a fast bowling action, before eventually giving it back to the boundary riders.
This made the commentators go, “Not allowed, not allowed, cameras on” as they saw the boy trying to pocket the ball, and then they laughed in unison as he eventually returned it.
As for the game, despite the six by Brevis, which was one of the five that he hit in his 28-ball 49, South Africa could only manage 155 in response to Australia’s 431/2, losing the game by a whopping 276 runs. But the Proteas had won the series before this game itself, having taken an unassailable 2-0 lead.
