HISTORY CREATED As Mohammed Shami Becomes Quickest To 200 ODI Wickets

The Indian paceman broke Australia’s Mitchell Starc’s record, who got to the landmark in 5240 deliveries

In India’s first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20 (Thursday), Mohammed Shami became the fastest to 200 ODI wickets in terms of balls bowled.

The Indian paceman broke Australia’s Mitchell Starc’s record, who got to the landmark in 5240 deliveries. Meanwhile, Shami has got there in 5126 deliveries.

Saqlain Mushtaq (5441), Brett Lee (5640) and Trent Boult (5783) are the next three on the list. In terms of matches, Starc (102) is the only one ahead of Shami (103).

Shami took just six deliveries to give India the first breakthrough, getting Soumya Sarkar caught behind in the very first over. Shami then had Mehidy Hasan Miraz caught at first slip in his fourth over. Bangladesh were 35/5 in 8.3 overs before Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali put on 154 runs for the sixth wicket. It was Shami who broke the partnership, dismissing Jaker for 68 off 114 deliveries to create history.

Shami, who was out of action for 435 days after the ICC 2023 ODI World Cup, made his return to the 50-over format earlier this month. He featured in two ODIs against England and claimed as many wickets.

Amongst bowlers who have 200 wickets in ODIs, Shami has the best strike rate - 25.6.
