Another day, another record for Smriti Mandhana. This time around, though, the Team India superstar has etched her name in the history books forever, as in the World Cup encounter against Australia today, she became the first and only Women’s cricketer in history to notch up over 1,000 runs in a single calendar year.
Smriti entered the game with 982 runs to her name and needed just 18 more to breach the 1000-run mark. After a rather slow start, scoring 11 off her first 17 balls, the left-hander went 4, 6, 4 against Sophie Molineux to achieve the historic feat. And she breached the 1,000-run mark in style, launching a maximum over long-on.
1,000* - Smriti Mandhana, 2025
970 - Belinda Clark, 1997
882 - Laura Wolvaardt, 2022
880 - Debbie Hockley, 1997
It’s taken the 29-year-old just 18 innings to score 1,000 runs in 2025. So far this calendar year, the India vice-captain has gone past 100 four times and has crossed 50 on three other separate occasions as well.
Smriti has had a very quiet home World Cup by her standards so far, with scores of 8, 23 & 23, but the left-hander has made a thumping start to the crucial encounter against Australia. At the time of this report, she’s batting on 32* off just 30 balls.
India are third on the points table, and this is a crucial game for them, following an unexpected defeat against South Africa Women in their previous encounter. England top the table with 3 in 3, while Australia are second with two wins and a no result.
