Holder ruled out of T20 World Cup 2024; McCoy comes in as replacement

The fast-bowling all-rounder sustained an injury during the County Championship 2024

West Indies’ fast-bowling all-rounder Jason Holder has been ruled out of the 2024 T20 World Cup, starting on June 1, due to an injury he sustained during the County Championship 2024. West Indies have brought in left-arm seamer Obed McCoy as his replacement.

West Indies’ lead selector Desmond Haynes said: “Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon."

McCoy has played 33 T20Is for West Indies and picked up 43 wickets at an average of 21.46 and an economy rate of 8.50. His change-up deliveries could come in really handy in West Indies, one of the two hosts of the T20 World Cup alongside the USA.

"While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason's caliber, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage. We believe he will bring a fresh and dynamic energy to the squad,” Haynes added.

West Indies will commence their T20WC campaign against Papua New Guinea in Guyana on June 2.

WI's updated squad - Rovman Powell (capt), Alzarri Joseph (vc), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd

Reserves: Kyle Mayers, Matthew Forde, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh, Andre Fletcher
