How did CSK Land Dewald Brevis? Ashwin Reveals Franchise's Secret Bid
CSK signed South Africa’s next big thing, Dewald Brevis, for INR 2.2 crore
Midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a strong statement, signing 22-year-old Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. The franchise had splurged INR 2.2 crore on the youngster, despite his base price being just INR 75 lakhs, leading to a lot of confusion.
According to IPL replacement rules, the franchise can shell out up to the original players’ signed price. In this case, CSK picked up Gurjapneet for INR 2.2 crore, and hence paid Brevis the same amount. CSK all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, in a recent YouTube video, spoke about the same, revealing how the franchise landed Brevis.
"DB [Dewald Brevis] had an outstanding second half of the season for CSK. I came to understand two or three other teams also spoke with him but they missed picking because of having to pay extra money,” Ashwin said in the YouTube video.
The all-rounder also revealed that CSK had outbid other franchises, as they were ready to shell out INR 2.2 crore for the 22-year-old.
“While picking up a player mid-season, there will be discussions with the player's agent to negotiate on an 'X' amount apart from the base price to acquire his services. CSK were willing to pay the extra money due to which he (Brevis) came into the franchise."
“CSK had found their combination towards the back end of the tournament. I believe they will go into the IPL 2026 auction with almost 30 crore,” he further explained.
