It has been 18 years since the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, which took place in South Africa in 2007. But Yuvraj Singh, hitting six sixes off Stuart Broad, remains a part of the folklore that would continue to do the rounds for several more decades to come.
In between Broad and Yuvraj, there was one person who escaped most of the limelight, and it was Andrew Flintoff who first riled up Yuvraj by going overboard with on-field arguments, which fuelled the Indian to go after the bowler that bowled the next over.
Flintoff, after 18 years, finally admitted to the fact that he was wrong, and he had crossed the line against Yuvraj.
“So with Yuvraj, we used to go at each other. But it was always with the best intentions and fun. And I think he is brilliant, he is a good lad. And then in that World Cup game against India, my ankle was gone. I thought it was my last game. I was angry, and I crossed the line,” Flintoff admitted on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, as per a report in Times of India.
“It’s one of the few times in my career I have done it, I think. And then he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes. It should have been me. I was fielding on the boundary. After the first one, he looked at me like that. I go, Oh here we go. And then the second one, he was looking for me again. By the fifth one I wanted him to do it (big laugh),” added one of the most celebrated English all-rounders.
While all three, Yuvraj, Flintoff and Broad have retired, the incident continues to inspire millions to play like Yuvraj Singh. He remains the only Indian to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket.
