Ravindra Jadeja has been playing for India in Tests since 2012 and so far he has played 28 Tests in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia). Kapil Dev, during his playing days, was part of 35 Tests in what are now called SENA countries, although this moniker is newly coined.
During Kapil’s time, he played his first SENA Test in 1979 in Birmingham and his last one in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1994. India, during this period, played 36 matches, lost 11, drew 21 and won only four.
From Jadeja’s first SENA Test in Durban in 2013 to his last at Old Trafford in Manchester in 2025, India have played 28 Tests, winning seven, drawing seven and losing 11.
Thus, in terms of India winning matches in the presence of these two all-rounders, Jadeja seems to be winning the race.
But according to Navjot Singh Sidhu, former India opener turned commentator, Jadeja is no Kapil Dev, as he has not been able to single-handedly win matches for India in tough conditions.
"I have praised Jadeja a lot. Kapil Dev was a bowling all-rounder, and he won a lot of Tests for India overseas. But Jadeja has done well in the supporting role away from home. He bowls his overs quickly and executes restrictive bowling, but he is unable to win Test matches, and it has been evident since the first Test," Sidhu was quoted as saying on his official YouTube Channel by Hindustan Times.
In the ongoing India-England series, Jadeja has scored 454 runs at an average of 113.50 with a century and four other fifties. He has also taken 7 wickets, including a 4-fer.
