India registered a comprehensive victory in Mohali to go 1-0 up in the series but the bigger storyline was Virat Kohli's 100th Test as captain as well as Rohit Sharma becoming India's 35th Test captain. Rohit had prior experience of leading limited-overs teams before becoming the permanent skipper but he didn't have any red-ball captaincy experience as such. In that regard, the way he changed his bowling and marshaled the unit was commendable, and Sunil Gavaskar is all praise for the Mumbaikar.
"Excellent debut (as captain). When you win inside three days, it tells you your team has been superior. More importantly, when India were fielding, the bowling changes were very impressive. The catches were going to exactly where the fielders were. The fielders did not move much. What does it tell you? Spot on-field placing," Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports, reported IANS.
"Even the bowling changes, you could possibly argue that the Ravindra Jadeja in the first innings was brought on a little later but at the end of the day, the team has won with 2 days to spare. I would give him 9.5 out of 10."
The second Test of the series will be played in Bengaluru under lights from March 12 after which the Indian Premier League's 15th edition will begin on March 26 in Mumbai.
