Will Shakib Al Hasan take part in ICC Champions Trophy 2025?

There’s question marks over Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling action and could be out of Champions Trophy 2025 if not cleared

Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 could hinge on the result of a second test of his bowling action from Chennai. The left-arm spinner earlier failed his assessment at UK’s Loughborough University, which suspended him from bowling across domestic and international cricket.

The 37-year-old’s actions were first scrutinised when he appeared for Surrey in a County Championship clash against Somerset. Per 11.3 of the ICC's regulations for illegal bowling actions, he was reported for suspect action and suspended from all major forms of cricket.

Shakib hasn’t played international cricket since the two Tests against India due to the protests against his participation in his own country. However, the left-arm spinner was in line to return to the Bangladesh setup for the Champions Trophy, but now his participation is at the mercy of the lab in Chennai.

"It was very shocking to hear that Shakib couldn't pass the bowling action test [at Loughborough]," BCB's chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain said. "I will have to find out whether he has tested himself again. We have to wait for this information. The board hasn't instructed us fully on Shakib. I think every minute counts. I am sure we can clarify this in a day or two."

Bangladesh’s squad for the Champions Trophy will be announced in a day or two after Shakib’s results come back. The Asian country kick off their Champions Trophy against India on February 20 (Thursday) in Dubai.
