ICC introduces in-match penalty for slow over-rates

Meanwhile, an optional drinks interval is also now allowed in T20 Internationals

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to take a leaf out of ‘The Hundred’s’ book and has introduced in-match penalty for over-rate offences. Teams that lag behind on the over-rate (i.e. teams that don’t bowl the overs within the stipulated time) will now be punished instantaneously, and will be forced to field an extra person inside the circle from the point of the transgression.

“A fielding side must be in position to bowl the first ball of the final over of the innings by the scheduled or rescheduled time for the end of the innings. If they are not in such a position, one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings,” the ICC confirmed the introduction of the rule in a release.

This is the same rule that exists in ‘The Hundred’.

Meanwhile, the ICC has also introduced optional drinks interval as a part of updated playing conditions. This optional break can be taken midway through the innings.

Both rules will come into effect later this month.

“The first men’s match to be played under the new playing conditions will be the one-off tie between the West Indies and Ireland at the Sabina Park in Jamaica on 16 January while the first T20I of the three-match series between South Africa and the West Indies in Centurion on 18 January will be the first women’s match played under the new playing conditions,” the ICC confirmed.
