I'm a little bit flat about missing out on an IPL contract: Adam Zampa
The Australia leg-spinner, who picked up 13 wickets in his side's T20 World winning campaign went unsold in the recent mega auction
Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa says he is feeling a little flat about missing out on the Indian Premier League (IPL) contract after going unsold in the mega auction.
Some of his teammates like Aaron Finch and Steven Smith too did not invite any bids during the two-day event. The franchises invested severely in overseas fast bowlers and multi-skilled players, leaving Zampa out in the cold.
With plenty of homegrown Indian spinners already available, the franchises did not invest much on overseas ones, but Sri Lankan's Wanindu Hasaranga was sold for INR 10.75 crore, emphasising further that the teams were willing to throw a lot of money on multi-skilled players.
Like Zampa, other leading white-ball spinners like Adil Rashid, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi and Mujeeb ur Rahman too did not attract any bids.
"I missed out at the IPL auction, unfortunately. I'm a little bit flat about that, to be honest," Zampa, told the Unplayable Podcast.
"I thought if there was ever a year that I was going to get the opportunity over there again, it would have been this year. Just with the way that I'm bowling and, from a personal point of view, I just feel like my game's at a point where I just want to be playing the best cricket possible.
"International cricket is that and then the next thing after that is the IPL," Zampa, who picked up 13 wickets in Australia's T20 World Cup-winning campaign added.
His teammate Kane Richardson, who also went unsold in the auction felt the fact they left the tournament in the middle of the first phase in India, could have played on their minds, but Zampa disagrees.
"It's very hard as an overseas spinner, particularly if you're just a specialist spinner who's not so much of a mystery spinner," said the 29-year-old.
"The mega-auction, the way it panned out, they spent a lot of money on fast bowlers, a lot of money on all-rounders and even batsmen don't get great money. They get okay money.
"And then once all that money gets spent, they go, 'Okay, we need some spinners now,' and usually they feel like the local guys can do an okay job anyway
"I think there'll be opportunities maybe next year with the IPL though … I think I'd be a valuable addition to any of those squads, particularly with the way that I'm bowling at the moment."
Australia have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka at home. Zampa, who missed the previous game, will look to return to the XI for the fourth match, starting later today (February 18).
