Impact Player: Seven teams that can get it right

This IPL season, teams that leverage the Impact Player Rule better will have a huge advantage over the others.

The Impact Player Rule will allow teams to bring in a substitute to replace a member of the playing XI. The substitute will be allowed to bat/bowl, unlike before. To understand it better, read our explainer on the Impact Player Rule here.

Chennai Super Kings

Potential XI

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Deepak Chahar, Maheesh Theekshana, Mukesh Choudhary

Potential Impact Subs

Ajay Mandal/Nishant Sindhu, Ajinkya Rahane/Shaik Rasheed, Prashant Solanki, Rajvardhan Hangargekar

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    Ajinkya Rahane/Shaik Rasheed to arrest a collapse

•    Ajay Mandal/Nishant Sindhu to provide a late innings impetus

•    Prashant Solanki to bowl to favorable matchups

•    Rajvardhan Hangargekar/Simarjeet Singh to exploit possible favorable conditions or opposition weaknesses

Bowl First

A bowler can be subbed for:

•    Prashant Solanki to bowl to favorable matchups or exploit possible favorable conditions (phase specialist)

•    Rajvardhan Hangargekar/Simarjeet Singh to exploit possible favorable conditions or opposition weaknesses (phase specialist)

•    Ajinkya Rahane/Shaik Rasheed to arrest a collapse or anchor a chase against favorable matchups

•    Ajay Mandal/Nishant Sindhu to provide quickfire cameos or lengthen their batting

The lack of death bowlers and backup hitters will be a difficult hole to plug. CSK will be relying on MSD’s tactical brilliance and Chepauk’s spin friendly conditions to help them protect their fortress.

Delhi Capitals

Potential XI

Prithvi Shaw, David Warner (C), Mitchell Marsh, Axar Patel, Sarfaraz Khan (WK), Rovman Powell, Lalit Yadav, Kamlesh Nagarkoti/Ripal Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Anrich Nortje

Potential Impact Subs

Aman Khan, Kamlesh Nagarkoti/Ripal Patel, Mukesh Kumar, Yash Dhull

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A dismissed batter can be subbed for:

•    Yash Dhull to arrest a collapse

•    Aman Khan/Ripal Patel to provide a late innings impetus

•    Aman Khan/Mukesh Kumar to bowl to exploit new ball movement

Bowl First

•    DC can start with Mukesh Kumar over a batter, say, Manish Pandey. After his new ball spell, Kumar can be subbed out for Pandey

•    Post first innings, a bowler can be subbed out for a batter. Based on the target and ground conditions, they can go with Aman Khan/Ripal Patel/Yash Dhull

DC’s batting lineup and bowling attack does not inspire a lot of confidence, with not a lot of depth in either departments. Also, their death bowling would be a cause of concern with no proven death bowling options outside Nortje.

Gujarat Titans

Potential XI

Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudarsan, Matthew Wade (WK), David Miller, Hardik Pandya (C), Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Shivam Mavi, R Sai Kishore, Mohammed Shami

Potential Impact Subs

Abhinav Manohar, Darshan Nalkande, Jayant Yadav, KS Bharat

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    KS Bharat to arrest a collapse or lengthen their batting lineup

•    Abhinav Manohar to provide a late innings impetus

•    Jayant Yadav to bowl to favorable matchups or exploit possible favorable conditions

•    Darshan Nalkande to exploit possible favorable conditions or opposition weaknesses

Bowl First

A bowler can be subbed for:

•    Darshan Nalkande, who can be middle-overs enforcer and, potentially, a death bowling option (phase specialist)

•    Jayant Yadav  to bowl to favorable matchups or exploit possible favorable conditions (phase specialist)

•    KS Bharat to arrest a collapse or anchor a chase against favorable matchups

•    Abhinav Manohar to provide quickfire cameos or lengthen their batting

GT are lacking in the death bowling department, and also risk playing too many anchors in their top order. It doesn’t help that they do not have too many quality overseas backup options to help make up for this.

Lucknow Super Giants

Potential XI

KL Rahul (C), Quinton de Kock (WK), Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Jaydev Unadkat, Ravi Bishnoi, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan

Potential Impact Subs

K Gowtham, Manan Vohra, Prerak Mankad, Yash Thakur/Mohsin Khan

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    Manan Vohra/Prerak Mankad to arrest a collapse or lengthen their batting lineup

•    K Gowtham to provide a late innings impetus and bowling to favorable matchups

•    Yash Thakur/Mohsin Khan, all-phase bowlers

Bowl First

•    LSG can start with a powerplay specialist over a batter, say, Ayush Badoni. After his new ball spell, the bowler can be subbed out for Badoni

•    Post first innings, a bowler can be subbed out for a batter. Based on the target and ground conditions, they can go with Manan Vohra/Prerak Mankad

LSG have bowling options for all phases and backups for every role. An impact player will help them lengthen their batting, or bring in more variety to their bowling.

Mumbai Indians

Potential XI

Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Cameron Green, Hrithik Shokeen, Tim David, Shams Mulani, Jofra Archer, Jason Behrendorff, Kumar Kartikeya

Potential Impact Subs

Mohd. Arshad Khan, Raghav Goyal, Ramandeep Singh, Vishnu Vinod

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    Ramandeep Singh to arrest a collapse or lengthen their batting lineup

•    Vishnu Vinod to provide a late innings impetus

•    Mohd. Arshad Khan, as a lower-order batter and death overs bowler

Bowl First

A bowler can be subbed for:

•    Mohd. Arshad Khan, a death bowling option (phase specialist)

•    Raghav Goyal to bowl to favorable matchups or exploit possible favorable conditions (phase specialist)

•    Ramandeep Singh/Vishnu Vinod to arrest a collapse or anchor a chase against favorable matchups

MI’s batting will struggle to accommodate Cameron Green, and the hefty price they paid for him all but guarantees a spot in the XI. And then there’s the Jasprit Bumrah sized hole they need to contend with.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Potential XI

Faf du Plessis (C), Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Shahbaz Ahmad, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazelwood

Potential Impact Subs

Avinash Singh/Akash Deep, Himanshu Sharma, Manoj Bhandage, Suyash Prabhudessai

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    Manoj Bhandage/Suyash Prabhudessai to arrest a collapse, lengthen their batting lineup, or to provide a late innings impetus

•    Avinash Singh/Himanshu Sharma to bowl to favorable matchups

Bowl First

•    RCB can start with Avinash Singh/Himanshu Sharma over a batter, say, Rajat Patidar. After his spell, Singh/Kumar can be subbed out for Patidar

RCB have most bases covered, with backups for most roles as well. They will hope that Maxwell is completely ready and has a decent season for them. They can use the Impact Player to attack spinners, something most RCB batters struggle with.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Potential XI

Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram (C), Harry Brook, Glenn Phillips (WK), Washington Sundar, Adil Rashid/Akeal Hosein, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik, T Natarajan

Potential Impact Subs

Abdul Samad, Vivrant Sharma, Kartik Tyagi, Mayank Markande

Potential Scenarios

Bat First

A batter can be subbed for:

•    Vivrant Sharma to arrest a collapse or lengthen their batting lineup

•    Abdul Samad to provide a late innings impetus

•    Kartik Tyagi/Mayank Markande to bowl to favorable matchups

Bowl First

•    SRH can start with Kartik Tyagi/Mayank Markande over a batter, say, Rahul Tripathi. After his spell, Tyagi/Markande can be subbed out for Tripathi.

SRH has a solid first XI, with death bowling being the only possible weak link. They can always use Bhuvi as a powerplay specialist, and use Kartik Tyagi at the death, a role he performed with great success for RR.

Note: All potential XIs have been drafted based on their home conditions.
