The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the stand named after legendary Pakistan captain Imran Khan, the only one to have won the ODI World Cup, would not be renamed at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The Gaddafi Stadium has had the Imran Khan enclosure ever since he won the 1992 World Cup as Pakistan captain.
There were rumours that since there was a renovation of the said stadium as it is one of the three venues in Pakistan to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the stand would be renamed after Khan, an opposition leader in Pakistan's political scene.
Khan, currently lodged in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, is facing corruption charges as former Prime Minister. A local court even sentenced him to a 14-year jail term.
The PCB has dismissed speculation that former captain and politician Imran Khan's name would be removed from an enclosure at the recently renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore due to his imprisonment on corruption charges.
The speculation was rife because Lahore falls in Punjab province, ruled by the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) faction, which also is at the centre in coalition with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Before the coalition, Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was removed from power and could not win the re-election. The Champions Trophy will begin on February 19 with the first match between hosts Pakistan and New Zealand.
