Imran Tahir still hopeful of making South Africa squad for 2022 T20 World Cup

Imran Tahir, who last played international cricket three years ago, is still hopeful of making it to South Africa’s squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and has declared himself available for selection.

A globetrotter who plays T20 cricket all over the world, Tahir last represented South Africa in T20Is in 2019, post which he has been isolated, leapfrogged by the likes of Tabraiz Shamsi, George Linde and Keshav Maharaj. Currently representing Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League, 42-year-old Tahir believes the selectors should not give up on him, yet.

"I am still available for selection in T20Is,” Tahir told Geo News in an interview, reported Hindustan Times.

“I believe I am fit enough to play in the T20 World Cup [in Australia]. I hope that selectors will consider my performances around the world. If they do, I am sure they’ll find me a deserving candidate."

42 now, Tahir has defied odds by playing cricket at the highest level for so long. His days as a player might be limited, but the leg-spinner is keen to give back and wants to get into coaching after hanging up his boots.

“I love to share my experience with young cricketers. Maybe I will become a leg-spin coach in the future," he said. 

“I feel that I got the opportunity very late, so I don’t take anything for granted and try to give my best."

The Sultans, who are the defending champions in PSL, have got off to the perfect start in PSL 2022, winning their first two matches comfortably. Tahir is confident that his side can extend the winning streak deep into the tournament.

"We are off to a good start. It is all because of the collective hard work of the team. I hope we continue with this streak in the tournament. This unity as a team is the key to success. When you work hard as a team and give your best, you surely get success."
