Not too long ago Shreyas Iyer was a lock in India’s XI in ODIs, but a combination of bad luck — with injuries — and other players peaking at the right time ended up putting the 28-year-old’s spot in the side in jeopardy weeks ahead of the World Cup.
But on Sunday in Indore, Iyer gave the world a timely reminder of his class and quality as the right-hander smashed a sublime 105 to put Australia to the sword and seal the series for India. He also, in the process, likely sealed his spot in the starting XI.
On the day, Iyer batted at No.3 for the 11th time in his ODI career as he blazed a stunning 90-ball 105. No.3 is now statistically his best position in 50-over cricket, with him averaging 58.36 there (as compared to 45.50 at No.4 and 32.44 at No.5).
But when asked if, going forward, he’d prefer to bat one down, the 28-year-old, who was named Player of the Match for his efforts, made it clear that he is more than happy to just be in the XI and bat wherever the team requires him to.
“I am flexible, ready to bat at any position, whatever my team needs to do,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation.
“Virat (Kohli) is one of the greats, there's no chance of stealing that (No.3) spot from him (smiles).”
Sunday’s encounter was just Iyer’s third hit with the bat since March, with a back injury ruling him out for an extended period of time. The 28-year-old described the recovery period as a rollercoaster ride and put down his comeback to two things: the support he received from his friends and family and his own self-belief.
"It was a rollercoaster ride,” Iyer said of the past 6 months.
“I've been working so hard the last few months, it was a lonely space. Excited to be back and enjoying the atmosphere in the dressing room. I was seeing matches on the TV and wanted to be out there. I'm grateful for the belief I have in myself.”
The century on Sunday was the third of Iyer’s ODI career, and his first since the 113* against South Africa in Ranchi last year.
