Gautam Gambhir Returns To India Ahead of England Tests: Report
The India head coach flew back home a couple of days ago to attend to a family emergency
With a week to go for the first Test against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned to India. According to a report on Cricbuzz, Gambhir has returned home to cater to his ill mother, who suffered a heart attack a couple of days ago. She is currently admitted to a hospital in Delhi.
It is believed that Gambhir returned two days ago. While the current condition of his mother is not known yet, it is believed that she is still in the ICU.
The good news is that the doctors are impressed with his mother's quick recovery, which could allow Gambhir to return to England ahead of the five-match Test series. There is a high possibility that Gambhir will be back in England early next week.
The Indian team is currently in the middle of a four-day intra-squad match behind closed doors in Beckenham. The players and the support staff wore black armbands as a homage to the victims of the Ahmedabad air crash.
It remains unclear as to who is in charge of the team in Gabhir's absence. Sitanshu Kotak (batting coach), Morne Morkel (bowling coach), T Dilip (fielding coach) and Ryan ten Doeschate (assistant coach) are part of the backroom staff.
The first Test will be played at Headingley from June 20 onwards.
