Former India captain Sourav Ganguly identified the biggest threat for Pakistan in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group stage clash against India in Dubai. He feels that Indian spinners are far superior and Pakistan don’t really play spin well.
In their last match against New Zealand, Pakistan could only muster 167 runs in 29 overs of spin, from spinners who are not even considered world-class.
“On the wicket in Dubai, they will need spinners. I presume this Dubai pitch will turn a bit, and Pakistan don’t play spin very well. India have quality spinners,” Ganguly said during a promotional event.
Ganguly is not wrong in the sense that Pakistan have lost 9 wickets to left-arm wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav in three matches since 2017 and averaged a lowly 10.5. Against Indian off-spinners though, they have a better record.
Against left-arm spinners, which India have in the form of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, Pakistan average 32 and score at 4.3 runs per over, which will not fit the bill in this day and age.
Ganguly even called India favourites, not only against Pakistan but for the entire tournament. “India are not just favourites against Pakistan but for me, they are favourites for this tournament,” he said.
