India blessed to have Rohit Sharma as their captain: Sunil Gavaskar

The batter recently led India to their second T20 World Cup title

Rohit Sharma became only the third captain to lead India to a World Cup title. He achieved this feat when India beat South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados on June 29. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Rohit's unselfish approach in the tournament, which often puts impetus on getting India to a brisk start rather than worrying about his personal milestones.

"He led from the front, showing a complete disregard for personal milestones and instead looked to get the team off to a flying start every time. India are blessed to have him as their captain,” Gavaskar wrote in his column in Mid-Day.

Gavaskar also feels Rohit's ability to read the game and take calls based on his instincts stands out. “Rohit Sharma joins those other two cricketing giants, Kapil Dev and [MS] Dhoni, in captaining India to a World Cup trophy. Like the duo were, Rohit is also a people’s captain.," he wrote.

"Well-liked, not only by his team members but by the entire Indian cricketing community. The cricket fans also love his iconic style of leadership and tactically, he is as good as the sharpest in the game. Some of his moves can surprise you and make you scratch your head as to the reason, but the end result is more often than not exactly what the team needed at that moment."

Right after the final, Rohit announced his retirement from T20 Internationals (T20I), paving way for a new era in Indian cricket. However, he will lead India in the other two formats. BCCI secretary on July 7 (Sunday) confirmed that Rohit will lead India in the Champions Trophy next year and also the rest of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, which concludes in June 2025.
