Ashwin will re-join the side later on Day 4, confirm BCCI

The 37-year-old had to leave the team post Day 2 due to a family emergency

In the aftermath of Day 2 of the ongoing Test, Ravichandran Ashwin left the side due to a personal family emergency and was not expected to play a part in the remainder of the Test. 

Ashwin, who took his 500th Test wicket on Day 2, was expected to be a key player for the Indian side across the final three days of the Test, but an unforeseen emergency reduced the hosts to ten men temporarily.

However, in what comes as a huge boost for the side, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed that Ashwin will join the side later on Day 4, and will contribute with both bat and ball.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the return of R Ashwin to the squad after a brief absence due to a family emergency. Ashwin, had to temporarily withdraw from the squad after Day 2 of the 3rd Test in Rajkot to attend to a family emergency," the BCCI said in a release.

"Both R Ashwin and the team management are pleased to confirm that he will be back in action on Day 4 and will continue to contribute towards the team cause in the ongoing Test match.

"The team management, players, media and fans have shown immense understanding and empathy, acknowledging the importance of family as a priority. The team and its supporters have stood united in support of Ashwin during this challenging period, and the management is delighted to welcome him back to the field.

"Ashwin and his family kindly request privacy as they navigate through these challenging times."

On Saturday ( February 17), it was confirmed that Ashwin would be allowed to slot straight back into the starting XI if he were to return. The host broadcaster also confirmed that the 37-year-old would be allowed to bat and bowl right away without having to serve any time penalties.
