The ICC has imposed a fine on India after the team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur on December 3. According to the governing body, India fell two overs short of the minimum required quota after time allowances were applied.
A deduction of 10 per cent of the match fee was levied by match referee Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel. The decision was based on Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.
Stand-in captain KL Rahul accepted the charge on behalf of the team, pleaded guilty, and accepted the penalty. Consequently, there was no requirement for a formal hearing.
The fine follows India’s defeat in that match, in which despite centuries from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, South Africa successfully chased down 358. The over-rate breach added a formal blemish to the loss as the regulatory ramifications of poor time management.
India went on to win the third ODI and seal the series 2-1.
