India women’s team premier pacer Renuka Singh Thakur is all fit and ready for one of the biggest tournaments of her cricket career, as India gears up for a home ODI World Cup.
However, until not so long ago, there were many question marks on her availability as she had been away from the game for a long time now due to a stress fracture. She last appeared in March during the Women’s Premier League and has been in rehab since then. Now, she’s all ready to feature in the three ODI series scheduled right before the tournament for the Indian side against Australia.
“Renuka has just joined in for this series. She was recovering and she cleared all her tests,” head coach Amol Muzumdar informed in the press conference for the Australia series that’s beginning September 14.
“Renuka is an important member of the team, she is the leader of the pack as far as medium-pace bowling is concerned. I think she’s been an integral part of this team. She had an injury, layoff, and now she’s back with us,” Muzumdar added.
Muzumdar also said that this series against Australia would be like a trailblazer for the World Cup, as they are going against the strongest opposition. It will give them the right rhythm and things to focus on ahead of the tournament.
“I think this is a real trailblazer for the World Cup. It is a very important series for us and we are looking forward to this series, playing against one of the top teams in the world,” Muzumdar said in New Chandigarh on Friday, as quoted by the Indian Express.
“The preparation is the same. Yes, Australia has been the dominant force for so many years. There is no doubt about it. But we focus on ourselves and we give a lot of importance to how we prepare ourselves, how we plan, and how we are going to execute and that is the main issue. We try to focus internally. As a team, as a complete unit, we are all looking forward to play against Australia. Probably one of the best sides in the world.
“Talking about the team combinations, we will try and use this series as a platform. Keeping the World Cup in mind, it is a long tournament. The playing X1 combinations will depend on that particular day. We always decide by the game and on the day, how players are feeling.”
