Shreyas Iyer Set For T20I & Test Comeback: 'India Missed His Experience and Class'
He is likely to be named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 as well as the two-match home Test series against West Indies
A regular member of India’s ODI set-up, Shreyas Iyer is now on course to make a comeback to both the T20I and Test teams. According to a Times of India report, the aggressive Mumbai batter is likely to be named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 (September 9-28) as well as the two-match home Test series against West Indies (October 2-14).
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests - two each against West Indies and South Africa,” sources told TOI.
Iyer last featured in a Test match in February 2024. He has, in Tests, scored 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86, including one century and five half-centuries. Although he failed to register a 50-plus score in his last seven Tests, his form in domestic cricket has been remarkable. Representing Mumbai in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, Iyer hit 480 runs in seven innings at an average of 68.57 and an impressive strike rate of 90.2.
In the T20I format, Iyer hasn’t played a match for India since the beginning of 2024. However, he has made a strong case for himself through consistent performances in the IPL over the past two seasons. The 30-year-old played a key role both as a batter and captain, leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first title in a decade in 2024, and guiding Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in 2025, where they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Across the last two editions of the IPL, Iyer has been in prolific form with the bat, scoring 955 runs in 31 innings at an average of 45.48 and a strike rate of 163.5. With the 2026 T20 World Cup set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Iyer’s ability to dominate spin and accelerate in the middle overs could be valuable for the Indian team in subcontinental conditions.
