India register their biggest win riding on back of 3rd 50+ PS between Rahul-Rohit

Here are a few noteworthy stats from Match 42 of ICC T20 World Cup 2021 between India and Namibia in Dubai

The last day of the Super 12 stage and the day marked the last of a successful journey for Ravi Shastri as the Indian coach. Also, this was the last match in which Virat Kohli would be leading the Indian side in the shortest format of the game. Electing to field first, Indian spinners played a crucial part in restricting Namibia to a score of 132/8. Both Ravindra Jadeja (3/16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/20) bagged three wickets each and Jasprit Bumrah finished off things with a two-wicket haul. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma provided yet another stupendous start as they stitched an 86-run partnership for the first wicket. After the dismissal of Rohit in the 10th over, everyone would have expected Kohli to come out to bat. But, Suryakumar Yadav came out to finish things off and end India’s misery campaign on a high. Here are a few notable stats from Match 42:

Spinners have a ball

After Bumrah started the proceedings with a wicket in the fifth over, Jadeja was introduced for an over inside the powerplay and immediately he struck gold as he dismissed Craig Williams in his first over. Bowling in tandem, Jadeja and Ashwin wreaked havoc as both the bowlers bagged a three-wicket haul each. In T20Is, this is only the fourth innings for India in which two spinners have bagged three-plus wicket hauls. In 2017 against Sri Lanka in Indore and against Ireland twice in 2018 in Dublin, two of Indian spinners had achieved this feat.

Rohit joins Kohli and Guptill

Another prolific run scorer for India, Rohit reached to a special milestone. Though, it has been an edition of World Cup to forget for India, there were few notable achievements and Rohit reaching 3000 runs is also one of them. He became the third batsman overall after Kohli (3277) and Martin Guptill (3115) to reach 3k run in T20Is, two of them are Indians in the list.

The perfect duo

Another aspect which has been a positive take-away has been the openers. In all three matches India won, Rahul-Rohit provided valuable starts. In all these three matches, they were involved in a 50+ partnership and had scored over 300+ runs. Only three other pairs in a single edition of T20 WC have scored 300+ partnership runs. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan (340), Matthew Hayden and Gilchrist (335) in 2007 and T Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya (300) in 2009 are the other three.

India complete three big wins

In their third match against Afghanistan, India won by 66 runs, their third biggest win by runs. In their match against Scotland, they won by an 81-ball margin, their biggest in terms of balls left in T20Is. In their last match against Namibia, they won by nine-wickets. This is the first nine-wicket win for India in a T20 WC. Previously, their biggest win was by 8 wickets and 81 balls which was against Scotland in their previous match.

Rahul coming good in the last three matches

Despite the two demoralizing defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand, India have the best net run rate (+1.747) among all the teams in Group B. The main reason behind that has been the form of the openers, in particular, Rahul. In all his last three matches, he registered half-century scores, including the second fastest half-century for India in T20Is and the joint fastest of this season – 18 balls. He became the first Indian to score three successive 50+ scores in T20 WC.
