India began their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20 (Thursday). It was Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto who won the toss and elected to bat first. Rohit Sharma lost the toss, and in doing so, India have the unwanted record of losing 11 tosses in a row, starting with the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad.
This is the most tosses a team has lost continuously in ODIs. Only the Netherlands, between 2011 and 2014, have lost as many tosses. If India lose the toss in their next game against Pakistan, they will be setting an unwanted world record in the 50-over format.
Out of the 11 tosses, Rohit has been in charge in eight matches. KL Rahul led India in the other three games against South Africa. India have won just five of the previous 10 matches they have lost the toss. The last time India won a toss in ODI cricket was in the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
In the Champions Trophy opener, India have opted not to pick Varun Chakravarthy and Arshdeep Singh. They have instead opted to get in Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja.
