One year ago, the whitewash at home against New Zealand proved fatal for India’s World Test Championship (WTC) chances as they failed to make the final, with Australia and South Africa pipping them to the summit clash.
And now, a year on, the team is once again at the serious risk of sabotaging their WTC Final chances due to a home whitewash as India have now slipped further in the latest WTC standings.
With a PCT of just 48.15%, India, who have now lost four Tests already, have slipped to fifth, below arch-rivals Pakistan who have a PCT of 50.00%. Sri Lanka are third with a PCT of 66.67% while South Africa (75.0%) and Australia (100%) are second and first respectively.
India could slip further down the table very soon as New Zealand kick-off their WTC cycle with a three-Test series against West Indies, starting December 2nd. The Men in Blue could also potentially slip to seventh should England end up winning a couple of Tests in the Ashes Down Under.
After reaching the final of each of the first two WTC editions, India’s false start in Tests under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir has now seen them become a mid-table team in the WTC. They now have an extended break in Tests, with their next assignment set to be in July next year away in Sri Lanka.
