India unchanged for remainder of Australia Tests, announce ODI squad

Skipper Rohit Sharma will miss the first ODI in Mumbai due to family commitments, paving way for Hardik Pandya to lead

India have named the same squad for the two remaining Tests against Australia. India took a 2-0 lead in the four-match Test series with convincing wins in Nagpur and most recently in Delhi. After missing the first Test in Nagpur, Shreyas Iyer returned to the XI in Delhi and has retained his place, alongside Suryakumar Yadav who debuted in the first Test. Interestingly, no vice-captain has been named for the series, an indication perhaps of India moving on from from the under-fire KL Rahul.

However, Rahul, who has 20, 17 and 1 in the three innings against Australia so far has been named in the 17-member squad.

The Test series will be followed by a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series, starting March 17 in Mumbai. Jaydev Unadkat, who led Saurashtra to their second Ranji Trophy title recently finds a place in both the squads. Unadkat last played an ODI for India in 2013 against West Indies in Kochi.

The BCCI also announced that Rohit Sharma will be unavailable for the first ODI due to family commitments and Hardik Pandya will lead the side as a result. Pandya has led India in 11 T20 Internationals (T20I) but this will be the first time he will lead his country in ODIs.

After making a successful return to Test cricket, Ravindra Jadeja finds a place in the ODI team as well, with Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar being the other spinners. In the fast bowling department, Mohammed Siraj picks himself given his latest exploits in the format. He will in all likelihood lead the bowling attack, with Mohammad Shami, Umran Malik, Shardul Thakur and Unadkat being the other options.

With the 2023 World Cup scheduled to be played later this year, the series gives the No. 1 side an opportunity to try out different combinations and test themselves against another world-class side.
