In Bangladesh’s first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against India in Dubai on February 20 (Thursday), Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali put on the highest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in the history of the competition.
The two Bangladeshi batters broke South Africa’s Mark Boucher and Justin Kemp’s record of 131 runs for the sixth wicket, which they put up against Pakistan in the 2006 edition.
Jaker and Hridoy added 154 runs for the sixth wicket, Bangladesh's highest for any wicket against India in ODIs.
Hridoy and Jaker’s partnership came at a very crucial time as Bangladesh were reduced to 35/5 in 8.3 after they opted to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Jaker would have been out for a golden duck but Indian captain Rohit Sharma dropped a sitter at first slip, also denying Axar Patel a hat-trick. Hridoy was also dropped by Hardik Pandya at mid-off off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling.
Thereafter, the two batters didn’t give India any chance and batted with tremendous patience. In the process, both of them brought up their respective fifties - making it the second instance of two batters batting at No.5 or below to hit a fifty against India in the Champions Trophy.
That’s not it, this is also only fourth 100-plus stand for Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy.
