Sanju Samson’s presence of mind and brilliant glovework from behind the stumps resulted in India picking the prized scalp of England captain Jos Buttler during the third T20I at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 28 (Tuesday).
After Buttler decided to reverse sweep Varun Chakravarthy, he could not make a great connection. Even after being blinded by the change of stance by the batter, Samson behind the stumps kept his composure and caught the ball.
The on-field call was not out, and even the bowler did not look confident while appealing. However, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav took the review on Samson’s insistence. As it turned out, it was one of the best catches in the series.
Buttler’s willow had a faint edge, which the UltraEdge picked up. As a result, Buttler had to walk back on 24 off 22 balls and the 76-run partnership for the second wicket between the English captain and opener Ben Duckett ended.
Sunil Gavaskar, in the commentary box, called his fellow commentator, Kevin Pietersen ‘Sherlock Holmes’ after the latter was able to sense a bit of guilt in Buttler's eyes when the DRS was taken, saying it reeked of underconfidence and the fact that he might have nicked it.
