The Indian selectors have informed Rohit Sharma that he won’t be part of India’s red-ball scheme of things following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, reported the Indian Express. The batter from Mumbai ‘opted out’ of the ongoing Sydney Test after failing miserably in the last three Tests against Australia.
Rohit missed the first Test in Perth due to the first of his second child, and India ended up winning the match by a margin of 295 runs. Rohit then made his return and disturbed India’s winning combination. India lost two of the next three Tests, with Rohit only managing 31 runs across five innings at an average of 6.20.
The report also said that the selectors will also have a sit down with Virat Kohli once the Australia series is over. The right-hander has been mediocre in red-ball cricket for quite a while now and has also struggled in the ongoing series against Australia.
Kohli scored a hundred in the second innings of the first Test, but apart from that, the senior batter has only managed 84 runs in seven innings in the BGT 2024-25. However, spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will continue to be part of India’s Test set-up, which is set to undergo a massive transition phase.
Speaking on Star Sports about Rohit, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said: “I think it probably means that (if) India don’t qualify for the WTC final, the Melbourne Test will be Rohit Sharma’s last game. The (next) WTC cycle will start with the England series, and the selectors would likely want someone available for the 2027 final. Whether India gets there or not is another matter, but that’s what the selection committee is likely to do. We have probably seen Rohit Sharma for the last time in Test cricket.”
