It’s a well-known fact that India haven’t won a single ICC trophy in the last 11 years. Rohit Sharma and his men, on June 29 (Saturday), will have an opportunity to change that when they take on South Africa in the grand finale of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados.
They won the 2013 Champions Trophy in England but haven’t won anything since then. India lost the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup and then went down to Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup final. The Men in Blue have made it through to the knockout stage of every ICC event except the 2021 T20 World Cup but haven’t been able to go all the way.
They remained unbeaten in the 2023 ODI World Cup till the final, where they lost to Australia. India are unbeaten once again in the 2024 T20WC in the USA and the West Indies and could break their 11-year trophy drought against the Proteas, who are also yet to lose a game.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels if India go on to defeat South Africa at Kensington Oval, they will go on a trophy-winning spree.
“I feel if India get the job done today they are going to go on a trophy winning spree .. they have so much quality in and out of this squad .. Its been 10 yrs since they won a trophy and this one could lead to quite a few over the next years,” he wrote on ‘X’.
India started the tournament with wins against Ireland, Pakistan and the USA, while their match against Canada was washed out. They defeated Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia in the Super 8s before hammering England in the semi-final.
