Indian pacer Harshit Rana has been released from the squad after the first Test against England, which Shubman Gill and his men lost by five wickets, reported the Times of India.
Rana, who played for India A against England Lions, had been kept with the main squad as a precautionary measure.
“I haven’t spoken to the chairman of selectors; I will speak to him because there was a bit of a niggle in the group. That is why we wanted him as a backup,” said India head coach Gautam Gambhir. “But at the moment, everything looks fine, so if everyone is fit, he will have to fly back.”
Rana made his Test debut during the tour of Australia but managed only four wickets in two matches at an average of 50.75. Consequently, he was dropped from the Indian squad for the England series.
Aside from Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowlers had a tough time in the first Test. India allowed England to chase down 371 with ease on the fifth day.
Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur leaked runs at close to six per over, while Ravindra Jadeja claimed just one wicket across both innings. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj lacked consistency.
The second Test of the five-match series will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting on July 2.
