Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not just a name but an emotion. It might be a very repetitive line, but there is a reason behind that-he literally has meant Indian Premier League (IPL) ever since the start of the richest cricket league in India till now. The 17-year-old history of the IPL has MS Dhoni written all over it as the man has been in the record books of the league far more often than other players.
However, there are three records set by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Dhoni in his IPL career that look almost impossible to be broken ever by any other player.
Dhoni became the first captain in the history of the IPL to win 100-matches when CSK defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a 2019 IPL match at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur on April 12. Till now, no other captain has won 100 matches as skipper in the league. Close to Dhoni on the list comes Rohit Sharma with 87 wins.
Out of his first 100 wins, five came for Rising Pune Super Giants (RPSG) while 95 came for CSK.
After lifting the trophy for a record fifth time in 2023, MS Dhoni became the oldest captain in the history of the league with a trophy to his credit. By winning the trophy at 42 years and 325 days of age, when CSK beat Gujarat Titans in a last-ball thriller in the final of the 2023 IPL season, Dhoni broke his own record as he had won the trophy in 2021 as the oldest captain at the age of 40.
It would be almost impossible to imagine another player lifting the IPL trophy, let alone doing it as captain of the team.
Dhoni, who led CSK till 2023 before passing the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, has played as captain in the IPL for a record 226 times. Overall, he has played 264 matches in the league, once again the highest for any player so far.
However, his record of most matches as captain looks safer than a safe in a bank. The next player with most matches as captain in the IPL is Rohit (158), who is no longer a captain of any side.
