India’s clash against Canada abandoned without a ball bowled

The fixture was anyway pointless in the larger scheme of things, with India and the USA being the two sides to qualify for the group

India sealed their qualification for the Super 8s with a hard-fought victory over the United States of America on Wednesday (June 12). The clash against Canada was just an opportunity for the Men in Blue to try out their bench strength ahead of the Super 8 fixtures that begin on June 20 (Thursday).

However, owing to a wet outfield caused by overnight rains in Florida, India’s last group-stage clash was abandoned without a ball bowled. It is the second consecutive fixture at the venue that has been washed out after the contest between the USA and Ireland, which sealed the hosts’ place in the knockout stage. It is also only the second fixture in India's T20 World Cup history to be abandoned, after their first-ever T20WC fixture against Scotland back in 2007.

The Men in Blue have been pitted in the same group as Afghanistan and Australia (confirmed as of now), with the third team being a toss-up between Bangladesh and the Netherlands, who are fighting for a place to finish second in Group D. At present, Bangladesh are the firm favourites to qualify for the next stage, having won their previous encounter against the Dutch on Thursday (June 13).

Meanwhile, England’s contest against Namibia is likely to be a big fixture, considering what is at stake for the Three Lions, who lost points in their first two group-stage clashes against Scotland and Australia. However, they made a swift comeback with a breezy win over Oman, bringing qualification back into their own hands.

If the Three Lions fail to cross the line over Namibia, Scotland remain firm favourites to make it through from B, after Australia already sealed qualification with three wins out of their three clashes.
