It was everything happening all at once for Ayush Badoni of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 14 in Lucknow. Batting on 20 in the 13th over, Badoni hit a shot straight into the hands of Vijay Shankar, stationed at deep third.
The ball, which was the fifth of the 13th over, was high and seemed to be just about shoulder’s height. Before delivering that ball, Matheesha Pathirana had bowled a short ball wide, and two of his legal bouncers were over. The umpire sent it upstairs for a bouncer check, and technology decided that it was a bouncer.
Being the third bouncer of the over, it was declared no-ball and instead of getting out, Badnoi got a second life and a free-hit to celebrate the occasion as well.
In the next over, Badnoi faced Ravindra Jadeja and decided to reverse-sweep him. After being hit on the pads and being adjudged LBW, Badnoi reviewed, and the decision was reversed again as there was a slight inside edge from the batter’s gloves before the ball hit his pads.
However, even after being saved twice by technology, Badoni could not survive what was to follow. Unable to get going, as he was 22 off 16 and 16 of those runs had come in only three balls, the Lucknow batter went down the ground, and Jadeja, reading the batter's mind, bowled it wide outside off and the rest was completed by the man with the fastest hands behind the stumps, MS Dhoni.
It was also reviewed by the umpire to see whether the ball was collected by the keeper in front of the stumps. But with Dhoni behind the stumps, it was never going to be the case as the 43-year-old completed his 200th dismissal, the most for a wicketkeeper in IPL history.
