Mumbai Indians, who haven’t won their first game of the season since 2013, will come into this encounter without their skipper Hardik Pandya, who has been banned for a slow over-rate offence he picked up last season. CSK would be tough to beat home, especially with the spinners they have at their disposal.
Tilak Varma has been in phenomenal form in T20s since 2024, having smashed 1299 runs in 33 innings at an average of 54.13 and a strike rate of 156.1. The left-handed batter has six fifties and three centuries in this period.
R Ashwin has 50 wickets in 43 IPL games at Chepauk, that too at an economy of just 6.3. The offspinner is back in the CSK set-up and will enjoy bowling in home conditions.
Fast bowlers picked up a lot more wickets (bowling strike rate 18.5 vs 26.7) at Chepauk in the IPL 2024, but the spinners (8.9 vs 7.3) were a lot more economical. This season, CSK have a far better spin attack, so don’t be surprised if there’s a lot more turn on offer in Chennai.
